Michigan VINE Covers Kalamazoo Releases
MI-VINE is Michigan's free, confidential, 24-hour custody and criminal-case information service. Victims, families, and the general public can search or register through VINELink or call 800-770-7657. TTY service is available at 866-847-1298. The system is built for current status and future notice, not a long-term list of past Kalamazoo County releases.
County jail registrations may offer release, transfer, escape, or other custody-change notices. MDOC records support general release notifications. Participating court records can offer case status, disposition, or scheduled-hearing changes. The exact menu depends on the source. Select the matching Kalamazoo or MDOC record and read the events offered there instead of assuming every record supports every alert.
The VINELink entry page begins the state and person selection process.
The captured entry screen identifies the official service used to reach Michigan's search. It does not show that a named person is released.
Search Kalamazoo Inmate on VINELink
Start with enough information to separate the correct person from similar names. A full name or a known offender or booking identifier is best. Agency context matters just as much: a Kalamazoo County Jail record and an MDOC record can describe different stages of the same case, while a federal sentence belongs in a different locator.
- Open VINELink and select Michigan. Choose the custody or offender search offered by the current interface.
- Enter the person's full name or known identifier. Try a spelling variant only when the first search fails.
- Compare available identity and agency details. Do not choose a record based only on a common name.
- Open the single matching record. Read its exact current status, source agency, location, and last-update language.
- Distinguish “released” from “transferred.” A transfer means custody moved to another agency or facility.
- If no record appears, check the spelling and agency, then call MI-VINE or the source agency. Absence does not prove release.
For a person who has dropped off the KCSO roster, compare the VINE event with the official sheriff booking detail and court disposition. The broader named-person workflow on the Kalamazoo County home page explains when to add OTIS, MiCOURT, or a records request.
Note: A matching agency and identifier are stronger than a name alone when more than one person appears in the results.
Kalamazoo VINELink Release Fields
Displayed details vary because VINE relays data from participating agencies. Read the fields visible on the particular Kalamazoo or MDOC record rather than expecting one fixed form. The last-update and source language are part of the evidence because they show whose report is being relayed and how current it may be.
| Record element | What it means |
|---|---|
| Name and identifier | Help distinguish the matching individual; availability depends on the contributing record. |
| Source agency | Identifies whether the event came from county custody, MDOC, a court, or another participating source. |
| Custody status | Reports the source agency's current term. Read “released” and “transferred” as different outcomes. |
| Facility or location | May identify current custody. A changed or blank location does not by itself prove community release. |
| Event type | Shows which change can trigger an alert, such as release or transfer, when that option is available. |
| Update language | Provides timing or source context. Preserve it with any notification that may need confirmation. |
VINE is not a discharge certificate. If it reports release from one agency, another custodian or supervision term can still apply. A parolee has physically left a state prison but remains under MDOC control. OTIS can show Date Paroled, status, and supervision location. A discharged person has reached the end of MDOC jurisdiction, which is a separate legal event.
Register Kalamazoo Release Alerts
Registration begins from the confirmed matching record. The current interface determines which events and delivery channels are available. Choose only the events needed for that person, then protect the contact details and phone PIN used to acknowledge a notice.
- Select “Get notified” or the registration control from the matching person record.
- Choose an offered custody event, such as release or transfer. Do not assume an event that is absent from the record.
- Select telephone, email, or text when available and enter a safe destination that the registrant controls.
- For telephone registration, create a four-digit PIN. Keep it private and do not use a shared or unsafe number.
- When an automated call arrives, listen to the message, enter the PIN, and then enter the pound sign to acknowledge it.
- Update the registration if the phone number or email address changes. Recheck the source record after any major alert.
Phone calls can repeat for up to 24 hours if the event is not acknowledged. Email and text generally send one message per change and do not use the telephone PIN. A notification should be saved with its date and time, then checked against KCSO, MDOC, or the court if the distinction between transfer and community release matters.
The official MI-VINE service page explains Michigan registration and support.
The Michigan service image anchors the registration steps to the state program. Individual event options must still be read from the matching live record.
Two Michigan Release Notification Layers
Michigan has a distinctive second layer for direct crime victims. MI-VINE carries county custody changes, general MDOC release alerts, and supported court events. Registered direct victims who seek added statutory MDOC parole-hearing or decision notices use the separate MDOC Crime Victim Notification Unit at 877-886-5401.
These registrations serve different needs and should not be collapsed into one promise. A VINE signup does not automatically enroll a person for every MDOC victim notice. Likewise, registration with the MDOC unit does not turn VINELink into a permanent release archive. A person may need both routes when both custody changes and the additional parole-notice process matter.
The distinction also matters before a parole decision becomes a physical release. Michigan's Parole Board can grant parole, but MDOC still completes placement review, detainer checks, time certification, records review, and the signed parole order. MDOC states that at least 28 days are required between a grant and physical release. A VINE alert tied to the later custody change and OTIS Date Paroled are better evidence of prison exit than a hearing or grant date alone. The separate victim unit can address the added notice process, while the public OTIS record supplies the state status vocabulary.
- Custody alert
- A notice that a participating source reported release, transfer, escape, or another supported change.
- Parole
- Conditional release from state prison while MDOC supervision continues.
- Discharge
- The end of MDOC sentence or supervision jurisdiction.
- Transfer
- A move between custodians, not a return to the community.
The official Michigan VINE brochure describes the state's telephone, email, and text framework. Current channel availability still depends on the record and interface.
Confirm Kalamazoo VINELink Results
A timely alert can arrive before a durable public document, yet agency data can lag or be corrected. Treat the notice as a prompt to consult the source. For a Kalamazoo County Jail record, call jail administration at 269-383-8821 for a timely current or noncurrent question. KCSO Records at 269-385-6191 is the route for a booking and release summary or an exact release transaction.
Use the booking detail and court docket to explain the event. “Posted Bond” with a disposition date and blank current housing strongly supports the end of that booking by bond. It does not prove the charge ended. A Ninth Circuit commitment to MDOC explains a transfer, after which OTIS becomes the right state status record. Allow for reception and data processing before expecting the person to appear.
For a state prisoner, OTIS can show Parolee, Date Paroled, supervision location, Discharged, discharge date, and discharge reason. It excludes people whose case ended only in a county jail. For an exact document, request the parole order, discharge certificate, or sheriff release record rather than relying on a screenshot alone.
Note: Preserve an alert's event wording and timestamp before contacting the agency that supplied the underlying status.
Federal Release Checks Beyond VINELink
VINELink is not the locator for federal prison custody. Search the BOP Inmate Locator for a current or former federal prisoner from 1982 onward. A result may show a facility, “Released,” or “Not in BOP Custody” with a date. Those labels end the BOP custody claim only. Another jurisdiction, immigration authority, USMS status, or federal supervision may still be relevant.
USMS manages federal pretrial detention and transport, often through contract beds, and has no comparable public historic release locator. The Western District of Michigan docket can explain a federal case before BOP designation. If the facts point to immigration custody, use ICE's Online Detainee Locator by A-number and country of birth or by biographical details. ICE is a current or recent locator, not a durable release history.
| Last known system | Correct release route |
|---|---|
| Kalamazoo County Jail | KCSO inquiry, court disposition, jail confirmation, and sheriff release record. |
| Michigan state prison or supervision | OTIS, MDOC records, MI-VINE, and the separate victim unit when applicable. |
| Federal prison | BOP locator plus the federal sentencing docket. |
| Federal pretrial custody | Federal docket, last facility, and USMS Western District contact. |
| Immigration custody | ICE locator and the Detroit Field Office route. |
Choosing the correct custodian prevents the most common VINELink error: treating absence from a system that never covered the case as proof that the person is free.
